How to clean and care for your leather, suede or pony hair clogs

The best way to clean a pair of clogs depends on the material: suede is cleaned dry, smooth leather can take a damp cloth and pony hair is brushed. What they all have in common: no washing machine, no direct heat to dry them and a little patience.

Here's how to do it for each part of the clog: the upper (the part that covers your foot), the base and the insole.

How to clean suede clogs

Suede is leather with a velvety finish, and it's the material people are most nervous about cleaning. Our trick is simple: a dry microfibre cloth, with no product at all. Just rub the mark patiently and most everyday stains come off. We show you in this video:

  • If it's a mud stain, let it dry completely and then rub. When wet, mud just spreads.
  • If a mark is left, a suede brush or a suede eraser helps lift the nap and bring back the texture.
  • If they get wet, let them air-dry and, once they're completely dry, go over them with the cloth or brush so the suede feels soft again.
  • To protect them, you can use a suede protector spray. Test it first on a spot that doesn't show.

You'll find all our suede styles, like the Rio Strap Mink Suede or the Cannes bootie in tobacco and military green suede, in women's clogs.

How to clean leather clogs

Smooth leather is the easiest to look after.

  • For dust and marks, use a damp, well-wrung cloth and then dry it with a dry cloth.
  • Every now and then, apply a leather cream, neutral or in the same colour, with a soft cloth. It keeps the leather supple and shiny.
  • If they get wet, let them air-dry, away from radiators and direct sunlight: heat dries leather out.

How to care for pony hair clogs

On our pony hair clogs, the hair is on the outside, on the upper: it's leather with a hair finish. Here's how to look after it:

  • Brush it gently and always in the direction of the hair, with a soft-bristled brush.
  • Avoid getting it wet. If it gets marked, dab the stain with a barely damp cloth, without rubbing, and let it air-dry. Then smooth the hair with your hand or the brush.
  • Store them without flattening the hair, ideally in their box rather than at the bottom of the wardrobe.

How to clean the base: resin or wood

Almost all our clogs have a resin base, which copes better with damp than wood. Clean it with a damp cloth and dry it with a dry one, including around the studs.

Our wooden clog is the Campiña. Wood is a natural material: moisture and sudden changes in temperature affect it. Avoid puddles and, if it gets wet, let it air-dry away from any heat source. We explain more differences in wooden or resin clogs.

How to clean clogs on the inside

The insole of our clogs is cushioned gel-effect leather. To clean it:

  • wipe it with a barely damp cloth and a little mild soap;
  • remove the soap with another damp cloth;
  • let it air-dry before you wear them again.

If you wear them without socks, let them air out between wears.

Can you put clogs in the washing machine?

No. Leather, suede and pony hair shouldn't go in the washing machine: the water and the spin cycle damage them and can warp the clog. Always clean them by hand, as explained above.

How to dry clogs if they get wet

  • Wipe off the water with a dry cloth.
  • Stuff them with absorbent paper so they keep their shape and the moisture is soaked up.
  • Let them air-dry somewhere ventilated. Never with a hairdryer, on a radiator or in direct sunlight.

How to store your clogs

Store them clean and dry, somewhere ventilated and out of direct sunlight, ideally in their box or in a cloth bag. If you're putting them away for the season, put paper inside so they keep their shape.
